Should I get a projector now for xmas or wait?
I have been looking at a projector for a home theater for some time. I don’t need a really high end one because I am only looking to project ontoa 72-84 inch screen.
They have a really good deal on a viewsonic pj506d svga projector. 469, but you get the screen and mount at no charge with a rebate.
I am a little worried about the warranty though. It is a xmas present so if II buy it now, I will lose half the 1 year lamp warranty that comes with it which seems like the most important part.
You should probably wait for a really good deal and make sure that its a really nice brand and it has a long warranty. I think that you should wait till later because if its going to be used later then you should wait.
get the paris hilton edition!
A couple of thoughts:
1) A warranty period does not begin until you pick up or take delivery of the product. Many retailers will delay the delivery or pick up date to accommodate you.
2) New models for many brands will come out in the fall. These may have improved quality or features that will appeal to you and will probably cost less than last year’s models did when they first came out. Additionally, these brands will significantly reduce the price of last years models in the late summer and they will reduce them even further in the fall if they still have them in stock. Retail salespeople will always tell you the deal they have to offer you right now is the best you will ever find.
I don’t know how good of a deal you are looking at right now, but 10 years in retail have taught me to wait in a case like yours. Either way though, it sounds like you won’t have serious regrets.
Please take note that the Viewsonic PJ506d is NOT suitable as home theatre projector. There’s no comparison with the Viewsonic Cine1000 or Cine5000 which are truly designed for processing video and movie images. The PJ506d is a “business” projector meant specifically for displaying “slides.” And the color wheel speed is only 2X and you will see major “rainbow” artifaces when viewing movies.
There are better alternative home theatre projectors available at this time. Check out amazon.com for the “Infocus SP4805″ and read the glowing customer reviews along with actual home theatre setups. Currently at infocus.com a “refurbished” SP4805 goes for $320!
Good luck!
