Question by PGraves: Any Ideas on a Projector for a Cheap Home Theatre Setup?
I am wanting to set-up a home theatre projector at my house. Its primary purpose will be for watching DVDs and playing video games (i.e. Nintendo, XBox, etc.). I am not concerned with HDTV. The projector will need to sit between 15-23 feet from the screen. Additionally, I need the projector to be bright enough so that a little ambient light won’t make it unviewable.

I was hoping to get a brand name, or reputable projector of some form, however I was hoping to not spend over $ 800 on the projector itself. This projector WILL NOT be my primary TV, it will ONLY be used when I want to watch a DVD or play a video game.

I was looking at the ViewSonic PJ556D, it looks like its designed for office presentations but I didnt know if there is any reason why I couldn’t use it for my purpose? (I read somewhere that office-projectors migh not have the right color-wheel?)

Please provide me with recommended projectors meeting the previous requirements and/or ideas/things to look for
NOTE: Based off what I had read, I was looking at DLP projectors instead of LCD projectors.

Best answer:

Answer by techman2000
Buy a home theater projector for home theater applications because of several reasons:

1) Better colors
2) Better image quality
3) All appropriate video connections

If you get an office projector for a home theater, you will get inaccurate colors, lower quality video processor and you may only get composite, s-video and VGA connections. You want a projector that is capable of supporting DVI, HDMI and component which are the highest quality capables for video.

Don’t get an LCD projector for home theater. You get ghosting, pixelation and poor color production. DLP is the way to go.

Dell, Epson, Viewsonic are all great brands. Just don’t get an InFocus because they are going bankrupt and closing their doors within the next few months.

Give your answer to this question below!

Projectors are very useful for a wide variety of occasions. As long as there is a huge audience, a projector will come in very useful. You can use a projector to make a presentation in a small conference room, playback a video during a wedding function, or connect it with a home theater system for entertainment purposes.

There are many different brands to choose from. There is Dell, Sharp, Cannon, BenQ, Sony, Panasonic, and more. Each brand will have its own unique characteristics. You will have to examine different models to determine if the specs suit your own needs. Be prepared to pay a little bit more for more established brands. Prices for projectors can range from $600 to thousands of dollars.

The prices differ because there is a wide range of projectors to choose from. Each brand and model will have its own specifications. The key difference lies in how powerful the projector is. This is measured in terms of lumens. In lay man terms, lumens represent brightness. You will see projectors being advertised as 1500 lumens, 2000 lumens, and so on. The higher the value, the more powerful the projector. The problem is, for high-end projectors, the price tag is rather hefty.

Fortunately, there is a way to buy projectors at cheaper prices. There are two ways to do this. You can either check out a traditional price comparison website, or check out an auction comparison website.

The difference between the two is that for a traditional price comparison website, you are comparing prices between different vendors for new projectors. You may then choose to buy from the vendor with the cheapest price and offers the best services. Any additional bonuses like free shipping will help keep the cost down.

For auction comparison, you get the latest information from major auction sites. You will be able to buy new or used projectors. Some second hand projectors are still under warranty. Perhaps a company used it for a year and decide to upgrade to a bigger set. Hence they are selling away the old set at a greatly reduced price. Look out for deals like that. Those are the best deals. Otherwise, you may have to settle for a brand new projector.

When buying projectors, bear in mind that it’s not necessary to buy the most powerful projector. By buying what you need, you save on the additional premium that is usually loaded on higher end models.

In addition, note that models that are heavily advertised may cost more. After all, the manufacturers need to recoup the advertising costs. So such costs are often passed on to the consumers. In order to save on price, try avoiding heavily advertised models. Spend some time reading reviews from other users and make a wise buying decision.
