How can I calculate the “shape” of the beam from my projector?

Question by Eric C: How can I calculate the “shape” of the beam from my projector?
I’m going to be ceiling mounting a projector soon, my primary concern is keeping viewers from crossing infront of the picture. This is made a bit more difficult by the fact I’m using a Kinect so people are bound to be standing parallell with the beam. Anyone have some links or tips to nail down some formulas. I’d like to be able to draw a diagram of the room and a “pyramid” of the projected image from source to target. I have an optoma hd65, which is a short throw projector, but I don’t expect to have the whole solution handed to me. Some links to formulas or the angles the image spreads at would help. Fishing through the manual currently.
