Any ideas on non-working home theater projector – “In Focus” Screenplay 4805?

Question by macman: Any ideas on non-working home theater projector – “In Focus” Screenplay 4805?
Have a home theater with a built-in projector (attatched to ceiling) – In Focus Screenplay 4805. Anyway, the bulb burned out a few months ago and I replaced it ($ 350!!) – worked fine. Just today, as we were watching, the picture went black (no pop or flash or anything) and the projector sounded as if it were operating, then going off, then turning on again, etc., but no picture. When working properly, it does make a bit of background noise (I think the fan to cool the bulb goes on and off as needed), but this sound was too frequent, like it was trying to work, but wouldn’t make it, then would try again, repeatedly. Even after letting it cool and restarting everything – nothing. I took out the bulb and I don’t see anything obvious wrong with it. I don’t want to spend another $ 350 and find out that it’s not the bulb.
Anyone with similar problems or ideas to check without spending mucho cash on a service call?

Other than some form of fault in the electronics (which will require service), I would consider two possibilities.

The suggestion that the fan might have been coming on more frequently raises the suspicion that the bulb might have been overheating and triggering a shutdown (On the other hand, if cooling and restarting didn’t work it could be that the bulb has died again). At the very least follow the cleaning suggestions (See link) to see if this makes a difference.

The second suggestion is to verify that the lamp timer was reset after you changed the lamp last time. The way I read the manual if the number of hours exceeds the rated lamp life the projector will not start, and if not reset (hold down both “volume” buttons for ten seconds) after changing even a new lamp won’t start. Not too likely … but it could be that simple.

If neither of these things help I think it is time to contact inFocus support to see if they have any other suggestions. See the first link for the website pages for this projector.
