Projector Installation tips, Great advise for DIY ceiling mounted projector installations

I should begin by advising that in all projector installations it is always advisable to contract a professional Audio Visual Installation company.

The first things to consider whilst preparing to complete a ceiling mounted projector installation is what size image do you want to project and what surface area are you projecting on and what space is available for the projector to be mounted.
Once you have decided what size image you would like and where you would like to project to you can access what space you have for throw distance which will help you decide where to place the projector and which projector would be best suited for you application. Important things to consider when purchasing your projector is SVGA, XGA or 1080P, Lumens or brightness, contrast ration LCD or DLP. There are so many variables when it comes to projection depending on your application, if you have a dedicated darkened cinema room then typicaly a high resolution low lumens unit would be best suted. If your in an office enviroment then a lower resolution and hogher lumens would be more appropriate. If your unsure then seek professional advise.

example

If you wanted to project a 7ft / 210cm wide image onto a projection screen and had a mximum throw distance of 3m from the screen to the furthest point at which you could mount the projector then you would have a lense ration of 1 : 1.42, so long as your projector can achieve this ratio through its optical zoom then you all set.
for instance if your lense ration on you projector was 1.2 to 1.8 then this would be fine and you projector could be mounted from 2.52m to 3.78m
In short you times your screen width by you lense ratio i,e 210 x 1.2 or 1.8

Now that you have your screen size, the available area for you projector to be mounted you need to begin to think about the centre line. The centre line is in fact the centre of the projection area and this needs to be in line with the centre of you lense to avoid any horizontal keystone correction. In most cases the lense is not located in the centre of the projector so the projector will need to be moved either to the left or right of the centre line depending on what side the lense is on. You should take a measurement from the centre of your ceiling plate that holds the projector and the centre of the lense, use this measurement to offset the projector on the centre line. You should then mark up your projector mount ceiling plate and fix securely using the appropriate fixings.
Once you projector is secured to the ceiling safely you can run in it. Position the image as best you can to the projection area and nip your projector mount securing fixing up so just to hold the position, you can them make any small alterations to the position zoom and focus before securing the mount in place. At this point now you may need to make some vertical keystone correction or lense shift so that you are projecting a square image free from the trapezoid effet. Where ever possible try to use lense shift over keystone correction as it does not cause such degradation in image quality.

Right so you Projector and screen is up the last thing to consider is cabling and how you wish to run the cables back to your AV equipment. There are two main choices here either the cables run in surface mounted cable cover or the professionals come in and conceal all you cabling for the most minimal look with the least impact on the current aesthetics of your room.

Now you’re there I hope you enjoy your new projection system and hope I have been of some help. If you feel that you would benefit from a professional installation service please follow the links in the resource box.
