I forget what this was called, but it’s comprised of a DVD player, a digital projector, and those balls in the corner. Tampa Museum of Art.

Will this work? (Cable box to monitor)?

Question by Billy B: Will this work? (Cable box to monitor)?
So, what I plan to do is, rather than buying a $ 260 monitor for my bedroom, buy a $ 200 monitor instead. I have a cable box and I was wondering if i could use a cable that converts S-Video to VGA. Would this work without any other hardware? I have a DirecTV standard receiver box and plan on buying probably viewsonic vx2433wm monitor.

Also, I planned on getting a VGA splitter, like this one

http://www.amazon.com/Cable-VGA-HD15-Male-Female/dp/B000BSHI4C/ref=pd_bxgy_e_img_c

—-or this one—–

http://www.amazon.com/Projector-Splitter-cable-Plated-connectors/dp/B000FI2EAG/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&s=electronics&qid=1260083236&sr=1-3

These VGA splitter cables are really meant to send one signal to two monitors but I want to use it to plug in the cable box AND the computer to the monitor so i don’t have to switch them out when i alternate use. Would the cable work for this or not? I obviously wouldn’t be using them both at once.

Considering audio, when using the cable box, I just about always use headphones. So, I planned on a cable that I already have which is RCA L and R to 3.5mm stereo (male), plugged into a coupler, with a male end of a 3.5mm cable with volume control on it plugged into that coupler, then my headphones plugged into that volume control cable. I am not too particular when it comes to sound quality, but am I going to even be able to make out the audio after all those connections?

Thank you for your help in any of the questions above because I know there are more than one =)

Answer by N
It should work, but your resolution will be of standard definition, that is, something like 640×480. This is not changeable.
Those splitters will not work; it will not discriminate what kind of signal should go through to the monitor and which should not at the same time. You will be better off investing in a KVM switch that will do what you want to do.

That was the 3rd generation of what is now in it’s (I believe) 4th incarnation (the PT-AE-900), and some would say the 6th in the form of the PT-AX200. It was, and is, a good projector.

It was the first projector I ever saw working … and I was reasonably impressed but found it a bit too washed out (low contrast) for my taste and eventually bought a Canon LCOS model.

As can be expected it is not as good as the latest versions, and the original list price of $ 3000 had fallen to a street price of about $ 1500 when it was discontinued in 2006.

A 60″ screen isn’t worth much (may $ 50) … and it’s really too small for a projector like this (a 90″-100″ is supportable).

A new bulb would cost about $ 300 (but refurbished projectors should have a new bulb).

The street price for a model AE-900 is about $ 1500 … if you could find one.

Note that new 720p projectors are now selling for under $ 1000 (although the Panasonic LCD models offer more flexibility). That said, the Panasonic AX200 (See 2nd link for specs) is selling new for $ 1300.

See the link for results of a search … prices asked between $ 900 and $ 2200 (but the stores with higher prices are dreaming in technicolor!)

I’d be surpised if anyone would pay more than $ 800-$ 900 for the setup you describe. But at that price it might be a reasonable deal.

Personally, I’d look at the PT-AX200U
